Hallway Interior Design Ideas & Tips!
The hallway is not often first on the list for home renovations, but your hallway is the entrance to your home and sets the expectation for the rest of the house. At the very least, you shouldn’t underestimate the importance of this connective space. The hallway is the passageway through which air and light travel through from room to room, so this area will help determine the flow and sense of openness about your home.
There a few major elements to consider in any hallway design project: light, height, air and flow. This recent Space Harmony project was a perfect example of a neglected hallway and how changing this little-thought-about area can dramatically alter the appearance and feel of your space.
Before I got my hands on this hallway, the space was claustrophobic and had an institutional feel—almost like a hospital corridor.
Air and Light: The first decision I made was to remove the wall at the end of the hall to open the space and to allow air and light travel through.
Height: I replaced the carpet with a blonde engineered wood flooring, which, with its light colour and long lines, creates the illusion of a taller ceiling.
Flow: To build visual interest and to break the monotony of the row of doors, I added the wall panelling. The contrast in wall colour to the cream wainscoting helps to break the height. The nice clean lines in the panelling and the flooring guide your eye through the space and create a gentle, rhythmic flow from room to room.
We were so pleased with the results of this project. Now this hallway really makes an entrance!
