Rustic Cottage Design

We approached this 400-square-foot transformation in Sooke, BC with a vision to honor the natural surroundings while creating an intimate retreat that feels both grounded and uplifting. What was once a utilitarian workshop with a basic T-Bar ceiling has been reimagined as a soulful cottage that embodies the essence of Pacific Northwest living. The cathedral ceiling became our canvas for vertical expansion, allowing us to craft a loft-style sleeping sanctuary that makes the modest footprint feel remarkably spacious and connected to the outdoors through carefully positioned windows.

The material palette speaks to our philosophy of authentic expression—exposed pine paneling creates a warm envelope throughout, while the concrete floors ground the space with cool tactility and practical durability. We intentionally preserved and highlighted the structural elements, allowing the wooden beams to tell a story of craftsmanship and time. The turquoise sliding barn door introduces a moment of coastal color that punctuates the neutral warmth of the wood, becoming both a functional space divider and an artistic focal point. Each design decision was guided by our commitment to creating a harmonious dialogue between rustic charm and modern comfort.

Our intimate kitchenette design embraces honest simplicity with its open shelving, copper sink, and live-edge countertops that celebrate the natural character of the wood. The dining area adjacent to the wood-burning stove creates a ritual gathering place where guests can enjoy meals while watching flames dance and feeling the radiating warmth. We carefully curated each detail—from the woven basket wall display to the patterned bathroom tiles—to create a sense of discovery throughout the space. The result is a cottage that offers both the comfort modern travelers expect and the authentic connection to place that makes a stay truly memorable, all while framing the breathtaking views of the acreage and mountains beyond.
