When we were commissioned to design this Chatime location in Vancouver, we recognized an exciting opportunity to challenge conventional bubble tea shop aesthetics. Rather than following the typical approach of bold colours and overwhelming graphics that saturate this market, we envisioned a space that would transcend demographic boundaries while maintaining the energy and warmth essential to the bubble tea experience. Our design philosophy centred on creating an environment that felt both vibrant and refined—a place where diverse customers could feel equally at home, whether they were students seeking a casual hangout or professionals looking for a sophisticated coffee break alternative.

Working within the constraints of a very tight budget, we embraced the challenge as a creative catalyst rather than a limitation. Every design decision was carefully considered to maximize visual impact while maintaining cost efficiency. We sourced materials and fixtures that offered exceptional character and durability, focusing on elements that would create lasting appeal rather than trendy details that might quickly feel dated. The warm wood elements provide organic texture and timeless appeal, while the industrial metal stools add contemporary edge without overwhelming the space. Our strategic use of integrated lighting and custom millwork created architectural interest that elevated the entire environment beyond its modest budget parameters.

The result is a space that truly stands apart in its neighbourhood—one that successfully bridges the gap between casual accessibility and sophisticated design sensibility. We created distinct zones within the compact footprint, from the dynamic service counter area to the intimate seating nooks that encourage both quick visits and longer conversations. The neutral palette punctuated by natural wood warmth ensures the space feels welcoming across all seasons and times of day, while the clean lines and thoughtful proportions create a sense of calm that contrasts beautifully with the bustling energy of bubble tea preparation. This project demonstrates our belief that exceptional design isn’t about unlimited budgets, but about understanding space, materials, and human behaviour to create environments that truly resonate with their intended purpose.
