What To Know Before Buying An Antique Bed Frame
If you’re eyeing an antique bed frame at one of Vancouver’s antique shops, there’s something you should know: it’s not always easy to find a mattress that will fit appropriately. Not all antique bed frames will match today’s standard size mattresses, and you may have to buy a new mattress to find one that will fit your antique bed frame.
When you’re shopping for an antique bed, make sure to take a measuring tape with you. You’ll want to measure and write down the dimensions for each antique bed frame you’re considering so you can figure out your options for mattresses.
Although choosing a mattress for an antique bed frame isn’t always as easy as choosing one for a standard bed frame, you do have options. It’s possible to order specialty mattress sizes online, convert your antique bed frame, or order a custom sized mattress to fit an unusual bed frame.
In addition to mattress size, you’ll need to consider your bed frame’s foundation and bedding size.
Three Quarters Size Mattresses
Some antique bed frames use a size called “three-quarters size.” These are not common in mattress stores. However, you can order three quarters size mattresses from specialty retailers online.
Antique Bed Frame Conversion
Antique bed frames that don’t take standard sizes or three quarters size mattresses can be more complicated, but they can also be converted. You can use a bed conversion kit, or DIY a conversion to turn your irregularly sized bed frame into one that will hold a standard size mattress. If you do convert your frame, you should keep in mind that altering your bed frame can decrease its value as an antique.
Custom Sized Mattresses
If you prefer to keep your antique bed frame intact, you can order a custom sized mattress. There are online mattress companies that can make custom mattress sizes. However, prices vary, and some custom mattresses can be expensive.
Mattress Foundation
Another critical factor to keep in mind is the mattress foundation. Typically, modern bed frames use slats or bars so your mattress can sit directly on the frame. But antique bed frames may not have this feature and will require a box spring or foundation. For an antique look, it’s a good idea to get a low profile box spring, as a higher profile box spring may have the mattress sit higher than the frame was designed for.
Antique Bedding
If you’re planning to use antique bedding, such as a vintage quilt, on your antique bed frame, keep in mind that a modern mattress may make your bedding look narrow. If it looks like it’s cutting it close, you can use a dust ruffle under your quilt, or choose a bedspread or sheets in a coordinating colour.
